1996. Most of the one word, and generic keyword domain names in major extensions such as .com, .net and .org were registered after 1996. Only few thousand of .ca domain names were registered by 1996. Back then only large corporations could register domain names, in many cases they had to be operating in more than one province to qualify for a registration. The dot-ca registry was managed since 1987 by a committee of volunteers out of the British Columbia University. It’s surprising to see one of the oldest domain names to drop today – PCP.ca. When you think about the age of PCP.ca you should take into consideration, that CIRA was incorporated only in 1998, and it officially became a dot-ca management entity that year.
Domain name PCP.ca belonged to PanCanadian Petroleum Inc. (PCP Inc.). The company was formed in 1971 when
Canadian Pacific Oil and Gas merged with Central-Del Rio Oils. In 2002 PanCanadian Petroleum was spun out of Canadian Pacific Railway and after that merged with Alberta Energy Corporation to form a company called Encana (www.encana.ca). As you can imagine there are plenty of links leading to www.PCP.ca, and the name will be one of the most valuable names to drop during today’s TBR session.
